In Newfoundland and Labrador?
We have nothing yet for Newfoundland and Labrador, Northwest Territories, Yukon and Nunavut — those are simply the places we have not been able to verify a clinic in. We would rather list 69 we have actually checked than three hundred we haven't — a wrong clinic at 2am is worse than no clinic.
Anywhere in Canada, the fastest route is to phone your nearest emergency veterinary hospital and ask outright whether they see birds; many do without saying so online. Provincial veterinary associations and the nearest veterinary teaching hospital are also good bets. If you know a clinic that treats birds and should be on this list, tell us and we'll verify and add it.
Common questions
Can any vet treat a bird?
No. Birds are structurally different from cats and dogs — different anatomy, different drug tolerances, different anaesthetic risk — and many general practices will not see them at all. Always phone before you drive anywhere, and say on the phone that it is a bird.
I found someone's bird and it looks hurt. Who pays?
Ask the clinic before treatment begins. Some will stabilise a found animal and recover costs from the owner once identified; others will not. Being clear on the phone that this is a found bird, not your pet, avoids a difficult conversation later.
It's the middle of the night and my bird is in trouble.
Call the nearest emergency veterinary hospital even if it isn't on this list and ask directly whether they take birds — many take avian emergencies out of hours without advertising it. Meanwhile keep the bird warm, dark and quiet, and do not try to feed or water an injured or collapsed bird.
I found a wild bird, not a pet.
A robin, sparrow, gull, duckling or bird of prey needs a licensed wildlife rehabilitator rather than a small-animal vet, and in Canada it is an offence to keep most native birds without authorisation. See our wild bird page for what to do.
